Youth hostels' changing rooms

Youth hostels are having a reinaissance with new ones appearing in bright, designer buildings with prime riverside or city centre locations and old ones being revamped* beyond recognition.

The Youth Hostel Association was set up "to help all people of limited means, especially young people, to develop a love and care of the countryside," explained Emma Crump, sales and marketing manager of the charity.

These days, if you walk into the halls of this new kind of hostel you'll soon see that the youth image and primitiveness are things of the past. You can still stay cheaply in a single-sex dorm but double and twin rooms with bathrooms are now available.

The Youth Hostel Association has reduced the size of dormitories to allow groups of friends and families to have a room to themselves. The trend towards more luxurious rooms is a response to customer demand. "Everybody has a carpet at home so that' s what people want when they go away. Everybody has a shower too," Crump says.

Out of the Youth Hostel Association's 230 hostels, there are about 40 still aimed at providing "a real rural experience". For example, the hostel in Black Vale in the lake District has no electricity and only spring water. These sort of hostels have a very different atmosphere," says Crump.
