Part A. Reading Comprehension

Read the following text:

TAKING CARE OF YOUR ENVIRONMENT

These days it is not just enough to look after oneself without spending equal time looking after the environment. The effect of the environment on individual health is now so well established that to concentrate on one and ignore the other is to do only half a job. Some of the damage done to the environment can be a direct result of our own individual actions, but the major pollution occurs from the side effects of a consumer-driven industrial society. Now that the threat of nuclear war has receded, the focus has been directed towards the pollution of the air, sea and earth, through many of our manufacturing processes. Organizations such as Friends of the Earth and Greenpeace camping to ensure that we do not lose sight of the problem.

It is quite understandable that individuals, when presented with a global picture, feel that personal sacrifices are pointless. The most that it seems any individual can do is to donate to a favourite charity and leave the prblem to governments. This is not true; individuals can make a difference by changing in small ways without dramatically affecting their lifestyle.
